Bill Moyers reports on Chapter 11 of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which multinational corporations are using to challenge democracy. Chapter 11 is only one provision in the 555-page NAFTA - negotiated to promote business among the US, Canada and Mexico and was supposedly written to protect investors, if foreign governments tried to seize their property. But corporations have stretched NAFTA's Chapter 11 to undermine environmental decisions, sue local governments, and overturn decisions of local communities. The cases are heard not in open court, but before international trade tribunals that make rulings in secret. The program details a system of private justice that is enabling companies to obtain covertly what they have failed to achieve publicly in national legislatures or courts. 58 mins, 2002

DAVID HARRIS presents his compelling new book, The Crisis: The President, the Prophet, and the Shah - 1979 and the Coming of Militant Islam. David Harris is the legendary antiwar activist who went to jail for draft resistance in the 1960s. Formerly a contributing editor at the New York Times Magazine and Rolling Stone, he is the author of seven previous books, including The League, Dreams Die Hard, The Last Stand and Our War.
A quarter century ago, a group of Iranian students swept into the United States embassy in Tehran, overpowering the Americans there and taking them hostage. The crisis that ensued would last for 444 days. It would define the Carter presidency and help give rise to the Reagan administration. It would begin as a rebellion against one brutal dictator and end with another in place. Dr. Zunes presents a compassionate but powerful perspective on the region. He is a professor of Politics and chair of the Peace & Justice Studies Program at the University of San Francisco. He is the principal editor of Nonviolent Social Movements (Blackwell Publishers, 1999) and the author of Tinderbox: U.S. Middle East Policy and the Roots of Terrorism (Common Courage Press, 2003).
Dr. Zunes has made frequent visits to the Middle East, where he has met with top government officials, academics, journalists and opposition leaders.

In the mid-1960's, Martin Luther King was routinely questioned and criticized for going "beyond" his civil rights agenda by speaking out against the Vietnam War. He answered his critics in what became one of his most famous and most powerful speeches: "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence," delivered to a meeting of Clergy and Laity Concerned, at Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967.
In that speech, Dr. King presented a powerful argument that the immoral war in Vietnam was wreaking untold havoc in the United States -- both morally and financially. It was a clarion call to conscience as he pleaded with his fellow Americans to come to the same realization that had driven him to speak out against the war, that "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today [is] my own government."
In this talk, Paul George will examine the importance of Dr. King's groundbreaking speech, provide a brief history of the Vietnam antiwar movement and the lessons that we need to learn from that history for our current situation, as our country finds itself yet again bogged down in an illegal, immoral and unwinnable war in a foreign land. As Dr. King said in his speech, "The great initiative in this war is ours. The initiative to stop it must be ours."
George has been a grassroots peace activist and organizer for over 35 years. He has been the director of the Peninsula's leading activist organization, Peninsula Peace and Justice Center, for well over a decade. He has been a nationally recognized leader of the antiwar movement dating to the time of the first Gulf war, continuing through the period of deadly sanctions against Iraq, up to the present time. He lectures frequently at colleges, churches and community groups, and has made numerous television and radio appearances speaking out against US wars of intervention.
